Are you nuts about nuts? Idabel is located in the Southeast corner of Oklahoma at the foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains. It is a beautiful place with bubbling creeks, dense forests with tall trees and trails that go on forever, crystal clear lakes and special places that pop up along the way. One of those special places is the Waterfall Creek Pecan Farm.
Did you know that pecans can be traced back to the 16th century? It is the only major tree nut that grows naturally in North America and is considered one of the most valuable. Many Native American tribes in the U.S. and Mexico used the wild pecan as a major food source and the first U.S. pecan planting took place in Long Island, NY in 1772. George Washington even planted pecan trees!
The Waterfall Creek Pecan Farm in Idabel, OK originally came into being in 1945 when a man named Preston Collvin worked hard to form 164 acres of paper shell pecans. The owners today, Keith and Ski Bateman, are proud that some of their trees that produce the finest pecans are the original trees that have weathered floods, droughts and ice storms through the years. It truly is a special place, filled with history and love and worth a stop if you are passing through Idabel or just looking for a neat place to visit on a day trip. It is a simple and beautiful orchard and the Batemans produce some incredible products from their farm. They offer paper shell pecans for retail, wholesale and mail order. You can just call in an order when you have a craving or a new recipe you found calls for the best pecans around. Visit their website for more information.
