They say it is the little things in life that matter—catching a beautiful sunrise, spending a precious moment with a grandbaby, or an uninterrupted moment in nature that you won’t forget. There are many of these types of moments to be had around Broken Bow, OK. Taking a day, weekend or even a whole week out of your busy life to take in the sights is well worth it and a trip to the Museum of Red River should be on your list!
The Museum of Red River is located in Idabel, OK—about an 11-minute drive from our Lago Vista Bed and Breakfast. After finishing up with your gourmet breakfast, take a trip to this museum, one that is totally dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Americas. You don’t need to be a museum fan or history buff to enjoy all that this place has to offer. For one, this museum is home to Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, the official State Dinosaur of Oklahoma. How neat is that? The full cast of the skeleton in the museum is fourteen feet high and forty feet long and the actual fossils were found only ten miles away!
There are several permanent galleries such as the Gregory Perino Archaeological Study Area and the Mary Bratton Curtis Gallery. The current exhibit which will be on display until May 3, 2014 is Mastering Metal: The Sculpture of Derald Swineford and Russell Whiting. This exhibit has some truly fascinating and creative metal sculptures. Coming up in April are two interesting workshops that you may want to check out:
April 12, 2014—Bamboo Flute Making Workshop with Choctaw artist and dancer, Presley Byington. Starts at 9am and cost is $45.
April 19, 2014—Weaving a Twine Bag Workshop with award-winning basket weaver and teacher, Mary Smith of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Starts at 9am and cost is $45.
